Whether you’re a first-time mom or a seasoned vet, capturing photos and clips of your little one never gets old. But for me (and most busy moms) lugging out a full-size camcorder and setting it up every time you want to catch your kid doing something cute, isn’t realistic. By the time you get ready to start recording, the moment has passed and you’re left frustrated…and you still have to put the equipment back up. Coby CAM5001 Camcorder To get started with the camcorder you first need to charge it by hooking it up to your laptop through the provided USB cable. I just left mine plugged in over night. After it’s charged, pop in a SD card and it’s ready to record! There is 128MB of built in flash memory but with an SD card you can expand the memory up to 16GB (up to 4 hours of additional recording time). Once you’re done recording your video you can watch it directly on your television with the included AV cables or upload it to your computer for playback there. Coby even included a editing software called ArcSoft that will allow you to edit, upload, and share your videos straight to YouTube if you’d like!

The design of the camcorder is great — it’s slim and sleek and no bigger than a small cell phone. It also seems to be fairly durable. While I wouldn’t recommend you do it, I let my 2 year old son check out the camcorder (he’s at that stage where he REALLY thinks he’s grown and can do any and everything on his own…so at times, I humor him) and it still works! That’s always a plus for parents of toddlers!

As for performance and quality; the camcorder functions well and is wonderful for catching those quick ‘cute moments’ that so often appear when you’re a parent. For the price, I think it’s well worth. But to be HD I do think picture seemed slightly darker than it should have (or darker than I’d expected). With that said, I can’t imagine you getting anything better for the price.

I personally LOVE the little gadget and plan to get a lot of use out of it. I think it’s a great item and would be perfect for any parent or grandparent to use on a daily basis.

The camcorder retails for over $100 but I’ve seen it listed on sale at Amazon.com for as low as $50!
