I’ll admit, I was scared to try a fitted cloth diaper. When I first decided to start cloth diapering C we were given a few that, let’s just say, were far from being up to par. But since trying the Babee Greens fitted hemp and cotton diaper, my whole perspective has changed.
About Babee Greens –
Our line of certified organic cloth baby diapers and baby products was developed out of a desire to provide an environmentally friendly alternative to traditional chemically grown cloth and plastic disposable diapers. Created in the Blue Ridge Mountains nearly ten years ago, Babee Greens began as a small business with one big goal of nurturing babies and the environment. Now owned and operated exclusively by mothers, Babee Greens has continued to expand its sustainable and biodegradable product selection, with all of its products made in the USA. The diapers and related diaper products are manufactured in Asheville, N.C.
I love the fact that they have stayed grounded and continued to manufacture their diaper in the US. Every extra job provided helps our economy.
Babee Green’s make two types of one-size fitted cloth diapers, the Growing Greens Cotton/Hemp Diaper and the Growing Greens Cotton Diaper. We chose to try out the Cotton/Hemp diaper which features 55% Hemp and 45% Organic Cotton. We chose this diaper because of the many benefits that hemp has such as –
It is the strongest fiber known to mankind which means it will last much longer than cotton alone.
Four times more absorbent than cotton alone.
It posses natural antibacterial antifungal properties that will will prevent diaper rashes.
Has no known insect predators which means it doesn’t require herbicides or pesticides to grow.
When we got the diaper in I immediately tossed it in the wash. I washed it once with 1/4 of the recommended amount of detergent, dried and then repeated. This is to help shrink and soften the diaper, which it did very feel. I was worried that the diaper would be rough against C’s skin but isn’t at all, and it seems to be getting even softer with every wash!
After washing I tried the diaper out…I was bummed, it didn’t fit. Needless to say, it was not the diaper, it was the mom putting it on who did not bother reading up on how to properly “fit” and adjust the diaper. Once I checked out the video on their site, I went back and tried the diaper again….perfect fit! Really, this diaper truly is a one-size diaper. I have no doubt that the Babee Greens diapering system would last from birth to potty training.
The fitted diaper features contour inserts that double as a diaper for 5-10 lb. newborns. Simply position the contours like you would a diaper and put a cover on! As your baby grows you can use the diaper alone by folding down the front and using the hidden row of snaps that are made to fit babies 10-18 lbs. This will allow you to adjust the rise and waist of the diaper. Once your little one reaches the toddler stage you can snap the contour inside the diaper for added protection. And as an added bonus, the elastic waistband makes it easy for potty-training toddlers to pull the diaper up and down themselves!
The guidelines for the diaper are just that….guidelines, you can decide which adjustment is right for your child. C is well over 18 lbs but because he is tall and skinny we are using the diaper folded down with the contour snapped in. The diaper fits snug and trim, just the way we like it!
Since we mainly use pocket diaper I only had a few – not so amazing – covers, even so we had no issues with this diaper leaking. It is incredibly absorbent! Some of you may remember me mentioning awhile back that I was just starting to put C in cloth diapers overnight, since then we have completely made the switch to cloth and are very rarely using disposables. Still, I was nervous about trying a fitted overnight; I’ve seen how soaked the others we tried get and I didn’t like the thought of him having to sleep soaked in urine all the way up to the waist. That does not happen with these fitteds! When C woke up the next morning he was dry. Furthermore, I very surprised (and extremely pleased) to find that the tabs of the diaper were dry! It literally made me want to go throw my other fitteds (which I rarely use because they get soaked all the way to the tabs) out the window!
I cannot tell you how happy I am that I tried these diapers out. Had I tried another fitted that wasn’t up to par I would have likely given up using fitted diapers altogether. This is now one of my top diapers whereas before fitteds were a last resort. I cannot wait to get some wool covers to pair it with this winter!
